My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 6

Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) and Harry Burns (Bil...Image via Wikipedia
This is my conclusion of a film arc I started a short while back. Each segment contained some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of watching. Some of the best writers of dialogue on the planet have written for film throughout the decades, and this has been a celebration of what they've achieved and immortalized on film. In no way has this been comprehensive, that's for sure. But, it's been fun to recall those special moments when the words registered on the screen, and in my memory. For those who wish to look back on what's come before, below are the links to the previous posts in this series:

So, for those times when you need something to say...

Ronin
Sam: "So, how'd you get started in this business?"
Dierdre: "A wealthy scoundrel seduced and betrayed me."
Sam: "Same with me. How about that?"
The Eagle Has Landed
"A wink from pretty girl at a party results rarely in climax, Carl. But a man is a fool not to push a suggestion as far as it will go."
The Dirty Dozen
"You've all volunteered for a mission which just gives you just three ways to go. Either you can foul up in training and be shipped back here for immediate execution of sentence. Or you can foul up in combat, in which case I'll personally blow your brains out. Or, you can do as you're told."
Prizzi's Honor
"If Marxie Heller's so f**kin' smart, how come he's so f**kin' dead?"
Rob Roy
Montrose: "Great men, such as yourself, draw rumors as shite draws flies."
Duke of Argyll: "You are the shite, Montrose, and the flies upon it!"

"One must never underestimate the healing power of hatred."
Ghostbusters
Dr Ray Stantz: "You know, it just occurred to me that we really haven't had a successful test of this equipment."
Dr. Egon Spengler: "I blame myself."
Dr. Peter Venkman: "So do I."
Dr Ray Stantz: "Well, no sense in worrying about it now."
Dr. Peter Venkman: "Why worry? Each one of us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back."

Dr Ray Stantz: "Everything was fine with our system until the power grid was shut off by dickless here."
Walter Peck: "They caused an explosion!"
Mayor: "Is this true?"
Dr. Peter Venkman: "Yes it's true... This man has no dick."
Thelma and Louise
"Look, you shoot off a guy's head with his pants down, believe me, Texas is not the place you want to get caught."

"Well, we're not in the middle of nowhere, but we can see it from here."
Some Like It Hot
"The story of my life. I always get the fuzzy end of the lollipop."

"Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it's a whole different sex! "
Duck Soup
"Remember you're fighting for this woman's honor, which is probably more than she ever did."
Moonstruck
"But love don't make things nice. It ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflake is perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us. We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die."
Mommy Dearest
"Don't f--k with me, fellas. This ain't my first time at the rodeo."
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Marion: "You're not the man I knew ten years ago."
Indiana Jones: "It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage."
When Harry Met Sally
Harry Burns: "There are two kinds of women: high maintenance and low maintenance."
Sally Albright: "Which one am I?"
Harry Burns: "You're the worst kind. You're high maintenance but you think you're low maintenance."

"I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 5

Horse Soldiers 1959Image via Wikipedia
This is my continuation of an arc I started a while back, containing some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of watching. However, you may have noticed I've sprinkled a few lines from some of my favorite oaters in the preceding posts. In this case, since a friend and fellow western admirer (blogger Livius of Ride the High Country) from across the pond, will be taking a break in between posts, I decided to dedicate one solely to that genre to see him off. So, for those times when you need something to say, pardner...
(I share credit with the first one with my movie blogging buddy, J.D.)

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
"When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk."
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
"Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals."
Once Upon a Time in the West
"How can you trust a man that wears both a belt and suspenders? Man can't even trust his own pants."
Rio Bravo
"When you come back, you holler 'fore you open that door. I'm libel to blast you just for the heck of it."
The Magnificent Seven
"They are all farmers. Farmers talk of nothing but fertilizer and women. I've never shared their enthusiasm for fertilizer. As for women, I became indifferent when I was 83."
The Wild Bunch
"What I like, and what I need, are two different things."
The Horse Soldiers
"As usual, I'm just presenting the grim facts. Colonel Secord doesn't seem to understand that the coffee tastes better when the latrines are dug downstream instead of upstream. How do you like *your* coffee, Colonel?"
Red River
"There's three times in a man's life when he has a right to yell at the moon: when he marries, when his children come, and... and when he finishes a job he had to be crazy to start."
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
"The last time that bear ate a lawyer, he had the runs for thirty-three days."
Unforgiven
The Schofield Kid: [after killing a man for the first time] "It don't seem real... how he ain't gonna never breathe again, ever... how he's dead. And the other one too. All on account of pulling a trigger."
William Munny: "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have."
The Schofield Kid: "Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming."
William Munny: "We all got it coming, kid."
(I share credit for that last one with a number of friends... including Herb)

My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 4

This is my continuation of an arc I started a short while back, containing some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of watching. So, for those times when you need something to say...

Memento
"She's gone and the present is trivia that I scribble on these f*cking notes."

"Is that what your little note says? It must be hard living your life off a couple of scraps of paper. You mix your laundry list with your grocery list you'll end up eating your underwear for breakfast."

"I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there?... Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different. Now... where was I?"
The Professionals
"There's only been one revolution since the beginning - the good guys versus the bad guys. The question is - who are the good guys?"
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Josey Wales: "When I get to likin' someone, they ain't around long."
Lone Watie: "I notice when you get to DISlikin' someone, they ain't around for long neither!"

Josey Wales: "You a bounty hunter?"
Bounty Hunter: "A man has to do something these days to earn a living."
Josey Wales: "Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy."
Devil in a Blue Dress
"A man once told me that you step out of your door in the morning, and you are already in trouble. The only question is are you on top of that trouble or not?"

"You said don't shoot him, right? Well I didn't; I strangled him. If you didn't want me to kill him, why did you leave me alone with him?"
The Usual Suspects
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist."
Tombstone
"You gonna do somethin'? Or are you just gonna stand there and bleed?"

"Nonsense, I have not yet begun to defile myself."
The Ninth Configuration
"And you know what that heartless butcher prescribed? He said, 'here, take this. It's a suicide pill, with a mild laxative side effect.' What kind of bedside manner is that?"

"I don't belong to the God is alive and hiding in Argentina club. But, I believe in the Devil, alright. You know why? Because the prick keeps doing commercials."
Heat
"You prefer the usual routine. We f*ck and you lose the power of speech."

"I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bullsh*t house, if you want to. But you do not get to watch my f*cking television set!"
The Day the Earth Stood Still
"I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason."
Minority Report
"Well, in my experience, parents often see their children as they want them to be, not as they are."

My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 3

This is my continuation of an arc I started a short while back, containing some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of watching. So, for those times when you need something to say...

Forbidden Planet
"Another one of them new worlds. No beer, no women, no pool parlors, nothin'! Nothin' to do but throw rocks at tin cans, and we gotta bring our own tin cans."
Fail-Safe
"If we can't convince them it's an accident that we're trying to correct, by any means, we're going to have something on our hands that nobody bargained for... and only a lunatic wants."
Charade
Reggie Lambert: "I already know an awful lot of people and until one of them dies I couldn't possibly meet anyone else."
Peter Joshua: "Well, if anyone goes on the critical list, let me know."

Reggie Lampert: "Why do people have to tell lies?"
Peter Joshua: "Usually it's because they want something. They are afraid the truth won't get it for them."
My Favorite Year
[Alan Swann has blundered into the wrong restroom]
Lil: "This is for ladies only!"
Swann: "So is this, mum, but sometimes I have to run a little water through it."
Red River
"There are only two things that are better than a gun: a Swiss watch and a woman from anywhere. Ever had a good... Swiss watch?"
Pulp Fiction
"Jules, if you give that f*ckin' nimrod fifteen hundred dollars, I'm gonna shoot him on general principles."
Goldfinger
"Choose our next witticism carefully, Mr. Bond. It may be your last."
The Duelists
"I am going to be killed responsibly, on horseback, as a compliment to the cavalry."
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
"You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!"
The Third Man
"Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. So long Holly."

My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 2

This is my continuation of an arc I started a short while back, containing some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of watching. So, for those times when you need something to say...

The Insider
"Fame has a fifteen-minute half-life. Infamy lasts a little longer."
L.A. Confidential
"Don't start tryin' to do the right thing, boy-o. You haven't had the practice."

"Oh, great. You get the girl, I get the coroner."

"I doubt you've ever taken a stupid breath. Don't start now."
Jackie Brown
"AK-47. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherf****r in the room. Accept no substitutes."
His Girl Friday
Bruce: "He's got a lot of charm."
Hildy: "Yes, it comes naturally - his grandfather was a snake"
Arsenic and Old Lace
"I don't know if I can explain it to you! It's not only against the law, it's wrong!"

"Look I probably should have told you this before but you see... well... insanity runs in my family... It practically gallops."
The Two Jakes
"What I do for a living may not be very reputable, but I am. In this town, I'm the leper with the most fingers."
Tequila Sunrise
"You've lost half a million dollars, confiscated a ton of useless coke, and been responsible for the murder of a federal informant. And, that's just tonight."

"You son of a bitch! How could you do this? Friendship is the only choice in life you can make that's yours! You can't choose your family! Goddamn it, I've had to face that! No man should be judged for whatever direction his dick goes! That's like blaming a compass for pointing north, for Chrissake! Friendship is all we have. We chose each other. How could you fuck it up? How could you make us look so bad?"
Casablanca
"How extravagant you are, throwing away women like that. Some day they may be scarce."

"As the leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca, I am an influential and respected man."
The Maltese Falcon
"My guess might be excellent or it might be crummy, but Mrs. Spade didn't raise any children dippy enough to make guesses in front of a district attorney, and an assistant district attorney and a stenographer."

"I distrust a man who says 'when.' If he's got to be careful not to drink too much, it's because he's not to be trusted when he does."
Rob Roy
Archibald Cunningham: "Think of yourself a scabbard, Mistress McGregor, and I the sword. And a fine fit you were, too."
Mary MacGregor: "I will think on you dead, until my husband makes you so. And then I will think on you no more."

My Favorite Lines From Favorite Movies Part 1

Image via Wikipedia
There are times, in any number of situations, when the most ideal response you can say to someone or to what's happening around you, is a singular quote from a movie. It makes sense, too. Some of the best writers of dialogue on the planet have written for film throughout the decades. This is particularly true for the very quotable first film I highlight below, and as stated so persuasively by blogger B-Sol in his fine review of said film back in February. Okay, I'll also stipulate for the record that for other times it's best to just keep 'your big yap shut'. But that would effectively kill the rest of the blog post, so we'll just move on with my original intent. The following (in no particular order) is the start of an arc for some of my all-time favorite lines from the movies I never tire of. So, for those times when you need something to say...

Casablanca
Capt. Renault: "What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?"
Rick Blaine: "My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters."
Capt. Renault: "The waters? What waters? We're in the desert."
Rick Blaine: "I was misinformed."
~
"Might as well be frank, monsieur. It would take a miracle to get you out of Casablanca, and the Germans have outlawed miracles."
~
Rick Blaine: "And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart."
Capt. Renault: "That is my *least* vulnerable spot."
Pulp Fiction
"No one needs to know about this except you, me and Mr. Soon-To-Be-Living-The-Rest-of-His-Short-Ass-Life-in-Agonizing-Pain Rapist here."
Heat
"He knew the risks, he didn't have to be there. It rains... you get wet."
It's A Wonderful Life
"One man's life touches so many others, when he's not there it leaves an awfully big hole."
Chinatown
"Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."
Apocalypse Now
"Everyone gets everything he wants. I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one."
Tequila Sunrise
"What is it, Nick? You need some chapstick or some lip gloss or something, Nick, because your lips keep getting stuck on your teeth. Or is that your idea of a smile?"
The Usual Suspects
"Back when I was picking beans in Guatemala, we used to make fresh coffee, right off the trees I mean. That was good. This is sh*t but, hey, I'm in a police station."
The Maltese Falcon
Brigid O'Shaughnessy: "I haven't lived a good life. I've been bad, worse than you could know."
Sam Spade: "You know, that's good, because if you actually were as innocent as you pretend to be, we'd never get anywhere."
The Silence of the Lambs
"I do wish we could chat longer, but, I'm having an old friend for dinner."

Quote Me This

As most agree, film is a visual medium - one that uses its projected images to reach the audience via their eyes. Needless to say, the sense of sight is one of our strongest senses. Without the visual cortex humans possess, movies would never have come about. And, the term imagination is derived from the Latin (verb), imaginari - meaning to Picture to oneself. All well and good--I am male and I fit that visually oriented stereotype, after all. [wife rolls eyes] Although, if I was all about the visual, the eye spectacle, then something like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen would be a summer movie favorite of mine--and we know by now that isn't the case. But for me, it doesn't stop there in my enjoyment of film. No, it still comes down to writing. No matter how good the characters look on the big or small screen, what they say (pause for effect), matters. And a film's dialogue is among the best things I enjoy when I take in either a new movie, or an old classic (that I've seen oh so many times). So here in this post, are some of my favorites movie quotes. What are yours?
The Schofield Kid: It don't seem real... how he ain't gonna never breathe again, ever... how he's dead. And the other one too. All on account of pulling a trigger.
William Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
William Munny: We all got it coming, kid.
Unforgiven
W.W. Beauchamp: Who, uh, who'd you kill first?
William Munny: Huh?
W.W. Beauchamp: When confronted by superior numbers, an experienced gunfighter will always fire on the best shot first.
William Munny: Is that so?
W.W. Beauchamp: Yeah, Little Bill told me that. And you probably killed him first, didn't you?
William Munny: I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folks.
W.W. Beauchamp: And so, who was next? It was Clyde, right? You must have killed Clyde. Well, it could have been Deputy Andy. Wasn't it? Or, or...
William Munny: All I can tell you is who's gonna be last.

Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.

Senor Ferrari: Might as well be frank, monsieur. It would take a miracle to get you out of Casablanca, and the Germans have outlawed miracles.

Bounty hunter: You're wanted, Wales.
Josey Wales: Reckon I'm right popular. You a bounty hunter?
Bounty hunter: A man's got to do something for a living these days.
Josey Wales: Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy.

Josey Wales: When I get to likin' someone, they ain't around long.
Lone Watie: I notice when you get to DISlikin' someone they ain't around for long neither.

Captain Cutshaw: And you know what that heartless butcher prescribed" He said, 'here, take this. It's a suicide pill, with a mild laxative side effect.' What kind of bedside manner is that?

Captain Cutshaw: I don't belong to the God is alive and hiding in Argentina club. But, I believe in the Devil, alright. You know why? Because the prick keeps doing commercials.

aando-lImage by le0pard13 via Flickr

Mortimer Brewster: Look I probably should have told you this before but you see... well... insanity runs in my family... It practically gallops.
Mortimer Brewster: Aunt Abby, how can I believe you? There are twelve men down in the cellar and you admit you poisoned them.
Aunt Abby Brewster: Yes, I did. But you don't think I'd stoop to telling a fib?

Vincent Hanna
: I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bullshit house if you want to. But you do not get to watch my f*cking television set!

heat1Image by le0pard13 via Flickr

Justine Hanna: You don't live with me, you live among the remains of dead people. You sift through the detritus, you read the terrain, you search for signs of passing, for the scent of your prey, and then you hunt them down. That's the only thing you're committed to. The rest is the mess you leave as you pass through.

mementoImage by le0pard13 via Flickr

Leonard: She's gone and the present is trivia that I scribble on these f*cking notes.

Natalie: It must be hard living your life off a couple of scraps of paper. You mix your laundry list with your grocery list you'll end up eating your underwear for breakfast

tequila-sunrise2Image by le0pard13 via Flickr

Nick Frescia: Generally I recommend my men stay away from vodka, and stick with scotch and bourbon.
Jo Ann: Why is that?
Nick Frescia: So the brass will know they're drunk and not stupid.

Hal Maguire: What do you mean, Frescia?
Nick Frescia: Let's see. You've lost half a million dollars, confiscated a ton of useless coke, and have been responsible for the murder of a federal informant. And that, that's just tonight.

Chinatown (film)Image via Wikipedia

Noah Cross: 'Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.

Evelyn Mulwray: Hollis seems to think you're an innocent man.
Jake Gittes: Well, I've been accused of a lot of things before, Mrs. Mulwray, but never that.

My Daughter's Quote

Heard this Sunday morning from the mouth of my nine year-old while she watched The Pink Panther:

"Why do every evil person have piranhas?!?"

Good question.
