Friday Forgotten Song: The Supremes - Stoned Love

Way back when, I had friends who'd argue endlessly about the quality and achievements of their favorite musical groups in comparison with others. None more so than with those groups that transitioned with new members over the years. The music labels were not about to let go of a popular (money making) group name just because the lead singer would go on to a solo career (which they also managed). And when that group was The Supremes, excuse me... make that Diana Ross & The Supremes, it could lead to an endless source of vocal disputes among my friends. I always felt the talented singers that came on to the group post Diva Diana got the short end of the stick. They had to compete with the legacy of all of those 60's hits for this Motown girl group that successfully crossed over to Pop. Plus, doing it with Ross still prominently on the scene with her solo songs and albums being promoted on the radio and tours (my friends and I managed to make of couple of these) made it that much harder. Still, new lead singer Jean Terrell had a voice that I really appreciated. Her short stint with The Supremes (aka, 70's Supremes) remains memorable.

The rest of this post has been updated and moved over to my current blog, found here.

  1. Fun! The Supremes sound wonderful with Jean. I can't imagine what was like to be touring when the Diva was so prominently on the scene. Thank you, Michael!

OK, on Facebook, people were posting what was the first concert they'd ever been too. What and where was yours? Mine was The Knack at the Greek Theatre on Halloween 1981. (Being so far removed as we were at Edwards AFB, Mom didn't permit me to go to concerts unless a parent was going. Don't think my friend's dad really enjoyed the concert as much as we did. ;-) )

  2. Yeah, I find when I go looking for Supremes songs to play on my iPod this is one I start with. Wow, in the early 80's you came out to The Greek from Edwards AFB for a concert! That was pretty sweet (and your friend's dad was an AF officer?). Come to think about, are you and Brian going to take in this year's back to the future-like movie look at the 80's again with HOT TUB TIME MACHINE?

I had to really think about this one. I didn't get to my first concert untilafter high school (but since I was interested in girls, I did go to all the Friday night dances). My first concert was the 1973 Let's Get It On album tour by Marvin Gaye. Likely, we did that early in fall of that year at Inglewood's The Forum (where the L.A. Lakers played for decades).

    Thanks, Christine.

  3. The best concerts were no where near the base or Lancaster, so L.A. area was the place to go. Yep, my friend's dad was either a Lt. Col or Col at the time. Poor guy, we were in the 3rd or 4th row, just off center. He was a trooper as I recall. Haven't seen any reviews of HOT TUB TIME MACHINE; but from trailers, we'll probably wait until it comes to On Demand. [Love the scene where the guys are trying to confirm what year they're in and ask the one chick, "What color is Michael Jackson?"] There haven't been many John Cusack films that we've seen that we haven't liked.

Ooh, Marvin Gaye as your first concert? Nice! On a date or with the guys hoping to meet some girls?

One of my friends on FB, said that she went to her first concert in college with the guy who became her husband. Her husband, Matt, happens to be the guy I went to MY first concert with. Needless to say, being the classy broad that I am [cough...almost said that with a straight face], I just had to make a joke about Matthew and concert-virgins. Their college-aged daughter thought that cute and amusing. ;-)

  4. A bird-colonel sitting up front at a Knack concert? He was a trooper.

Mine was a great concert to start my journey. And yes, it was a date with my girlfriend at the time, along with college friends (I think, 8 in all). You know, listening to you talk about the things you share on Facebook, makes me think about all sorts of trouble I could get into, if I ever joined ;-).

    Thanks, Christine.

  6. Like sharing some memory like the one you mentioned, and my wife saying, "WHAT?!?" And me going, huh oh ;-).

Hope you and Brian have a good weekend, too.

  7. Haven't heard this in...decades. Thank you! Is Jean Terrell related to the late Tammi Terrell, who sang duets with Marvin Gaye?

  8. Man, I feel terrible when I have to tell people what the first concert was I went to (not counting local garage bands). You won't believe anyone could do this to a child like me but I was taken to see John Davidson.

    Yeah.

  9. It's a great forgotten song.

Of all I could find, she's not related. But, Jean is related to someone you might of heard of. She is the sister of Ernie Terrell, the former WBA heavyweight boxing champion who once fought Muhammad Ali.

    Thanks, Naomi.

  10. We're talking about THE John Davidson... of Hollywood Squares?!?

  11. Yeah, that's the one. My sister had two of his albums. She made up for the concert later, though, and took me to see Steppenwolf. She did NOT, however, take me to see: The Who, The Temptations, Paul Revere & the Raiders, or Neil Diamond. Sometimes I can't believe I still speak to her. I probably only do because neither of us ever got to see CCR.

  12. LOL! Oh man, Naomi! John Davidson...I remember his hair. ;-)

  13. I loved the '70 Supremes. My favorite was Nathan Jones. Think I might have to go blip that one! Where you singing this while you were blogging it? Good stuff.

  14. Yes, you caught me on that, Bev  ;) . I had it playing while I was composing this post. Of course, I'm now playing Nathan Jones as I write my reply. Thanks, Bev.
