Mr. & Mrs.

Last week, I teed up Doug Liman's Mr. & Mrs. Smith for another viewing (this time, on Blu-ray Disc).  It's not a perfect movie, but then again, neither are we. Timing is everything, I guess. I don't love this film because of the pyrotechnics and the over-the-top super-assassin skills on display from the pair of super-attractive leads, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. [okay, every now and then I do get a kick out of the variety of combat hardware on hand and that it's being put to gorgeous use by a comely, long-haired brunette...] That's not really the reason. I love it because of this:
John Smith: Careful, Jane. I can push the button any time I like.
Jane Smith: Baby, you couldn't find the button with both hands and a map.
It is the facets of wedlock, and all the little things about marriage, that this story absolutely nails on the big screen.

  1. Congrats on your anniversary!

I don't know how I feel about this film. I've only watched it once and liked well enough but wasn't wowed by it... maybe all the hype surrounding Pitt and Jolie tainted my experience. I will say that I like Doug Liman's direction and have always found him an interesting filmmaker with a decent filmography. I really do need to watch this film again and your post has certainly piqued my curiosity.

  2. I have yet to see this movie, but you've convinced me to give it a try! It was precisely all the hype surrounding Pitt and Jolie that kept me from watching this movie when it came out.

Cheers and best wishes to you and Lady le0pard for your 21st!

  3. This movie falls into my "pure entertainment" category. Just good fun, no lessons or deep thinking, just bang, bang, and ha, ha.
For pure fun fire power may I recommend "Boondock Saints" and "Shoot 'em up", now I'm off to google "body count"+Taken does anybody happen to know?
Must say I like the way you CYA! with out a qualm.
    Smart move.

  4. If you want to see an awesome action film with an insane body count, check out HARD BOILED - John Woo's last Hong Kong film. Amazing stuff.

  5. J.D.: thanks, my friend.

Christine: I think you and your husband might well enjoy this. And thank you for kind words, and the YouTube link you sent. That was great.

HnL: I enjoyed both BOONDOCK SAINTS AND SHOOT 'EM UP. Plus, I second J.D.'s recommendation for John Woo's HARD BOILED. Thank you.

  6. Congrats on your anniversary, cousin!

I like "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" very much, because of the same reasons you do. Although I'm not married -and it seems that might take some time- I compared much of the jokes from the film with my parents' and specially my grandma's and late grandpa's relationships. I do recognize I might love it more after a few years of marriage.

I think one of my favorite lines is when John asks Jane if she did something different with the food...

    Jane: I added peas.
    John: Hummm... peas...

(It mirrors lots of times my dad arrives early for dinner, 'though my mom's answer would probably be "pepper").

  11. Ok, so I'm thick. We que'd up Mr n Mrs Smith last night and guess what its a chick flick disguised as a shootem up. No? How can we live with someone and not really know them? Thats heavy.
Anyway, congrats on your anni. That is cool.

  13. I love this movie but have always enjoyed it as pure entertainment. I've never read an analysis where it's put into such romantic and personal context. While reading, I kept thinking, "Of course, you're right, good point."

I also recommend HARD BOILED & THE KILLERS, too.

Congrats on your anniversary. You and Lady Le0pard (love Christine's term!) kick ass in ways that matter in real life.

  14. Thank you very much, Elyse. When my wife was reading this and the comments yesterday, among some of thing I heard her mouth when doing so, was "Lady Le0pard". I think she got a kick out of that. Though the kids like the term SWMBO, I take a ribbing from her because of it ;-). She likes Christine's term better, I think.
