A Movie Meme Worth Repeating - Films I Can Happily Watch Over and Over Again!

My good friend from across the pond, Steve Langdon at THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, has graciously bestowed an honor and a meme tag upon moi (along with Nigel Maskell and Keith). As best as I can ascertain, the purpose of this meme to identify and list the films that I'll watch repeatedly. I don't believe it is meant to show folks that I've seen a bunch of films (though my wife would argue), or that I have in my possession any keen or great cinema expertise (my wife just laughed at that one). Still, these do typify the movies that I've seen more than once and that I know (and she-who-must-be-obeyed knows) I will come back to again... and again. I'm sure there'll be some people that will either agree with or argue over these selections. Or, ask:
"Really? That one?!?"
Steve himself put together a marvelous list, and I couldn't help myself by taking sneak peaks at those before me. Steve was tagged by Ian Smith, who was tagged by Brian Sibley (via Good Dog), byway of Stephen Gallagher. These skilled British writers (and bloggers) definitely show how wonderfully varied the watch over and over lists can be (and that I have my work cut out to put together anything near as good). The rules for this meme are as follows:
  1. Provide a non-exhaustive list of films you’ll happily watch again and again.
  2. There is no rule 2.
  3. Reprint the rules.
  4. Tag three others and ask them to do the same.
So before the jump, I'll tag and nominate:

  1. Wow, this is a really great collection of films! There are several there that I also watch repeatedly (RAIDERS, GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY, HEAT, etc.). Very nice...

  2. Well my friend.  Your taste is impeccable!  I will try my best to muster up an entry and my honored tip of the cap to you for the nomination.

I had completely forgotten about Tequila Sunrise.  You know, I've never seen that film.  It has Kurt Russell and Mel Gibson- two of my all time favorites and I've never seen it.  Here it is on your repeat viewing list.  It has to be good.  I have added another to the queue.

If there was a meme for films I can't wait to see again, Butch and Sundance would be on that list.  I look forward to revisiting that one.  Terrific Selections Michael!

I was tired when I watched Children Of Men and about 20 minutes into it I gave up on it.  Perhaps I need to give it another try.

  4. Yeah, Robert Towne's Tequila Sunrise is a favorite of mine. If you're interested, last year I did a series on Butch & Sundance to explain why I love it so. Rachel (of Scientist Gone Wordy) and I did a parallel post on Children of Men at the start of this summer and I have to give her credit as to why it's shown up here.

I very much look forward to whatever list you put together, my friend. Thanks so much for the kind words.

  12. Cool,
    def Casablanca,
if we could wear out a dvd, Captain Ron, Blues Brothers.
sometimes I que up Unforgiven and just watch the ending over and over, really the best western ending ever.
Lawrence of Arabia, it blew me away on the rerelease  in the theater with the intermission and all, just like the old days, in 70mm.

  14. yeah! i love memes! thanks for hitting me up on this. i have something to do tonight when my little one goes to sleep.

as for you list:  anyone who puts Heat on their list is awesome in my book. i also have a repeat addicition with blade runner. blade runner is probably the only film that ive watched a billion times since my birth and it always feels new. . .i always get something different out of it. it gets better as you get older. i recently saw it on the big screen and i had to have my jaw physically brought back to my upper lip.

great list! never seen el cid.

  15. Thanks so much, Will. I very much agree that Blade Runner has aged wonderfully and always feels new. If you appreciate old time historical, battlefield epics (along with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren), then Anthony Mann's El Cid is for you.

  20. Absolutely cracking list, Michael. I've yet to see Tequilla Sunrise out of your selections, so will have to remedy that soon. Great to see Jackie Brown in there. For my money, it's QT's best and most mature work to date. You also reminded me it's been years since I last saw Hard Boiled, and also the likes of A Better Tomorrow and The Killer. You've also reminded me The Third Man and Forbidden Planet are about to go Blu over here, and also made me wish for a nice HD release for Chinatown. Thanks very much for your list. Joy to check out.

  22. You know some of these are on my list: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, BUTCH CASSIDY, TEQUILA SUNRISE. I only watched it once but MOMENTO is brilliant. SHAWSHANK definitely. I'm also a fan of THE GREEN MILE. LOVE ACTUALLY is one I watch over and over. Despite Mel Gibson going whacko, I love the LETHAL WEAPON trilogy and the DIE HARDS. A BEAUTIFUL MIND is still one of my all-time favs and I never tire of that one. I'm a die-hard fan of HEARTBREAK RIDGE. WILDCATS is always great when I need a laugh. And I won't pass up a chance to watch THE NATURAL either.

  23. I recently purchased Forbidden Planet in Blu, and can't wait to snap up The Third Man in the same. I can't for the life of me understand why Chinatown has yet to receive the HD treatment (along with Jackie Brown). Thank you so much for your comment, my friend.
